Soft and Fluffy: Homemade Greek pita bread

There’s nothing quite like the smell of warm, fresh bread filling your kitchen. One of my favorites to make is Greek pita bread — soft, fluffy, and so much better than the packaged kind from the store.

This easy Greek pita bread recipe uses just a few simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry, and the result is perfectly chewy rounds that puff up beautifully when cooked.

Whether you’re serving them with hummus, tzatziki, or as a wrap for souvlaki, homemade pita bread adds a comforting, authentic touch to any meal.

In this post, I’ll walk you through step-by-step how to make pita bread at home so you can enjoy this Mediterranean staple anytime you’d like.

Prep Time

15-20 minutes

Cook Time

3 hr 30 minutes

Makes

8 pitas

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of all purpose flour
  • ¾ cup water
  • ⅓ cup milk
  • 1 ½ tsp honey
  • 1 ½ tsp yeast
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 ½ tsp salt

Steps

1

To a cup add the water and milk. Microwave for 30 seconds or until the liquid is warm.

2

Pour mixture into a mixing bowl and whisk in the honey and yeast. Let it sit for a few mixtures until it becomes frothy.

Whisk in the olive oil and salt

3

Use a dough whisk and mix in the flour until a dough starts to form. Cover with plastic wrap and rest for 15 minutes.

4

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and stretchy.

5

Put the dough back into the bowl and cover it back with the plastic wrap from before. Put the bowl in a warm spot to rise for 2 hours. The dough will double in size.

6

After the rest, place the dough back into a floured surface and divide into 8 equal balls.

Place the dough balls onto a floured baking sheet and cover it again for 1 more hour.

After the second rise, roll out each ball into a circle disk.

7

Heat a skillet over medium heat and place the dough onto the pan. Cook for 30-45 seconds and flip onto the other side. Repeat this step 8-10 times until golden brown. Feel free to add more olive oil onto the pan if needed!

8

Repeat until all the pitas are cooked and golden!

Tips:

  • Wet your hands when dealing with sticky dough to make it easier
